Accommodation is the budget you can actually control
Flights are a one-time hit. Food you can dial up or down. But where you sleep is the line item you pay every single night — so it's where the biggest savings hide.
The ladder of cheap sleeps
- Dorm beds — still the floor for budget travel. Pick 8–10-bed rooms over 4-bed; the price gap is real.
- Private rooms in hostels — a step up, often cheaper than a guesthouse, and you keep the hostel kitchen and social scene.
- Guesthouses and hostales — in much of Latin America and Southeast Asia, a basic private double costs less than a Western dorm.
- Monthly rentals — past 3–4 weeks, a local apartment or long-stay room beats any nightly rate, sometimes by half.
Moves that compound
- Book the first 1–2 nights, then walk. On-the-ground rates in budget regions beat online prices once you can negotiate.
- Avoid the transit-zone markup. A 15-minute bus from the airport or main station usually halves the bed price.
- Ask for the weekly rate even on short stays. In slow season, many places will quietly apply it.
