Visa runs and extensions: how to stay longer legally

The longer you stay somewhere on one visa, the less you spend on flights and visa fees. For budget travelers, visa strategy is runway strategy.

Staying longer — legally — is a budget move

The longer you can stay somewhere on one visa, the less you spend on flights, border runs, and visa fees. For budget travelers, visa strategy is runway strategy.

The toolkit

  • Stack visa-free countries. If country A gives you 90 days and country B gives you 30, you can spend a season moving between them without a single visa fee.
  • Use extensions before you do visa runs. Many countries let you extend in-country for a fee that's less than a border crossing.
  • Check working-holiday programs. If your passport qualifies, these are the cheapest way to stay and earn — see the remote income tool for where your money lasts.

One caution

Visa rules change, and overstaying is never worth it — fines, bans, and stress cost more than any saving. Always confirm the current rule with the country's official immigration source before you plan around it. The visa notes on our country pages are a starting point, not the final word.
